The planets of the Solar System can be divided into two major groups: terrestrial planets and Jovian planets. It is imperative to note that, out of the two types of planets, Mercury, Venus, and earth are referred to as terrestrial planets whereas the rest are referred to as Jovian planets. While the Jovian planets are also referred to as gas giants, the terrestrial planets are called the inner planets. The differences between the two classes of planets are founded on the solar nebular model; which posits that the solar system was built out of a nebula cloud made up of dust and gas. Also, the terrestrial planets are characterized by silicate rocks while the Jovian planets are not associated with solid components. It is also critical to note that both classes of planets vary in position, makeup, and other elements. Among the primary differences between the Jovian and the terrestrial planets are the variations displayed by their surfaces (Inan, Helliwell & Kurth, 1983).
