Selected parts of the instructional strategy for the group
leadership unit are used to illustrate materials development. From the many
performance objectives that could be illustrated, we have chosen two: objective
6.3.1, “Naming strategies that encourage and stifle member cooperation,” and
objective 6.4.1, “Classifying strategies that encourage and stifle member
cooperation.” See Table 9.8 (p. 238 ) for a complete list of the
objectives included in Session 10.

All materials illustrated are scripts for web-based distance
instruction that learners study independently. They come together only for
interactive meeting participation and interactive group leadership associated
with objective 6.5.1, “In simulated problem-solving meetings with learner
acting as group leader, initiate actions to engender cooperative behavior among
group members.”

These examples of rough draft materials development assume
that the instructional designer is sharing development responsibilities with a
production specialist. The designer specified web-based instruction in the
instructional strategy and has now scripted what will appear on the web pages.
For the specific objectives illustrated in the example, the production specialist
will use the scripting to create a web page design simulating a comic-book
style, with cartoon characters and dialogue balloons. In the example that
follows, a comment on mediation is included as each component of the
instructional strategy is described. Note that the materials specified for
web-based delivery in this example lesson could have been specified with
equivalent learning effectiveness for broadcast television with a workbook,
illustrated text on DVD, traditional classroom instruction with role-playing,
or many other delivery systems. However, any delivery system chosen for the
entire unit on group leadership skills must preserve students’ opportunities to
observe and participate in small group interaction with adaptive feedback.
